John Rylands Library

An architectural treasure.

The John Rylands Library located within Manchester University is a masterwork of Victorian Gothic architecture. The notion of a library is perhaps not the first thought that springs to visitors' minds on beholding this building. It looks more like a cathedral or a castle!

The John Rylands Library was built between 1889 and 1900 at the instigation of Enriqueta Rylands in honour of her late husband, one of the wealthiest industrialists in Manchester.
